With Titus Welliver having recently made encouraging comments about the return of his classic crime series Bosch, and Ben Affleck preparing to release his new directorial effort on Netflix, now seems like the perfect time to revisit the film they worked on together. The movie in question was a Boston-set heist thriller in the vein of Michael Mann's classic Heat, with elements of Martin Scorsese's The Departed thrown in for good measure. It marked Affleck's first major studio movie, and paved the way for him to make the Oscar-winning Argo a few years later. The crime film is currently streaming on HBO Max domestically, but only for a little while longer.
It was released theatrically in 2010, with Affleck also playing the lead character — a bank robber who develops feelings for a hostage while putting together one last job. The movie also featured Rebecca Hall, Blake Lively, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, in addition to Welliver. Renner received an Oscar nomination for his performance, just a year after scoring his first nod for The Hurt Locker. Like that war thriller, Affleck's crime film was also widely acclaimed. It now holds a "Certified Fresh" 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, whose consensus described it as "tense, smartly written, and wonderfully cast," and called Affleck "a director to be reckoned with."
