It will take immense faith for a studio to greenlight a new Steven Spielberg movie with a tentpole budget, given the performance of his recent work. However, if there's anyone who has earned the goodwill and proven himself over and over again, it's him. Arguably the most influential living filmmaker in the world, Spielberg hasn't had a hit movie since 2018's Ready Player One, which benefited greatly from a Chinese market operating at its peak. But recent ambitious swings such as West Side Story and Disclosure Day have both underperformed to varying degrees. While the reviews for his movies have remained highly positive, Spielberg's pull is reportedly declining. That said, there have been decades on end when he has delivered the biggest and most acclaimed hits of all time, one of which is about to be removed from its streaming home.
After essentially creating the summer blockbuster in the 1970s and delivering Raiders of the Lost Ark in the 1980s, Spielberg's '90s were an even bigger success. This was when he won his first Best Director Oscar, for Schindler's List, and released the landmark blockbuster Jurassic Park. He ended the decade with a movie that combined his broad sentimentality with his unmatched technical capabilities — the movie featured an all-star cast and grossed nearly $500 million worldwide. It also won Spielberg another Best Director honor, and received 11 nods in total.
