2026 continues to be a fantastic year for horror, headlined by two colossal breakout films in Curry Barker's Obsession and Kane Parsons' Backrooms. For the slasher subgenre, however, it's been a bit more of a mixed bag. While Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma emerged as a steamy Cannes standout and other films like Ready or Not 2 and They Will Kill You delivered bloody fun, Scream 7 became by far the lowest-rated entry in the iconic horror franchise, and the long-gestating Psycho Killer penned by Andrew Kevin Walker was widely panned by critics and audiences. However, while it hasn't yet been released in theaters, a sequel to a modern slasher classic did make an early appearance on the festival circuit with more violent and stylish kills — In a Violent Nature: Part 2.

The original In a Violent Nature, released in 2024, was hailed as a breath of fresh air in the slasher genre when it was released, creatively following the perspective of the killer rather than the victims. It centered on the now-iconic undead Johnny (Ry Barrett), a lumbering giant wearing an antique firefighter's mask, as he stalked and brutally killed a group of friends in the woods after they dared to take a precious locket from the collapsed firetower where his body rested. At Fantastic Fest, original writer-director Chris Nash returned with co-director and co-writer Nate Wilson to show off an in-progress cut of the sequel, which brings back the killer for another rampage, this time at a summer camp where a young outcast is stuck spending the night with his camp counselor sister and her friends at their traditional annual end-of-season party. Now, at Shudder's New York Comic Con panel, a date has been set for Johnny's official return to theaters.

Barrett made the surprise announcement at the panel on Saturday evening that In a Violent Nature: Part 2 would be released in just four months, on February 12, 2027. It will once again be distributed in partnership between Shudder and the Independent Film Company, which has helped release no shortage of horror hits from The Babadook to Late Night with the Devil. Expect even more gnarly kills after the first film featured some brutal and stylish all-timers, like the instant classic yoga kill using his signature hooks and chain. Nash also serves as a producer on the sequel, joining Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer.

The finalized version audiences will see in theaters will be a bit different from what was shown at Fantastic Fest, but not too far from the work-in-progress cut. It mostly paid off for the critics who have seen it so far, earning a 60% score with ten reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Plenty of praise was heaped on the kills, which have been amped up from the already gory original with impressive special effects, but most agreed it didn't quite live up to the lofty heights of its predecessor overall in its embrace of more traditional slasher tropes. Joining Barrett this time around are Lucas Nguyen, Olivia Scriven, Laurie Babin, Fionn Laird, Donald MacLean Jr., and Evan Mars.
