There's a pretty good chance you've already heard that one of the best science-fiction movies of the last few years stars Pedro Pascal, but this isn't The Mandalorian and there isn't a mushroom zombie in sight. Instead, he's playing a fox in a movie about a robot raising an orphaned goose, and somehow it's every bit as good as it sounds.

The Wild Robot already had the kind of theatrical run most family movies would gladly steal and pretend they found lying around. DreamWorks' animated sci-fi adventure earned more than $335 million worldwide against a reported $78 million budget. The film has been exceeding all expectations on Prime Video, giving audiences another chance to catch up with one of the most beloved animated movies of recent years. Based on Peter Brown's 2016 novel, The Wild Robot follows Roz, a robot who washes up on a wild island and slowly learns how to survive among the animals who live there. Gradually, Roz starts building relationships with the animals on the island, including a clever fox, and becomes the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling named Brightbill.

The cast includes Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther) as Roz, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Fink, Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Brightbill, Bill Nighy (Love Actually) as Longneck, Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Vontra, Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) as Paddler, Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible) as Thunderbolt, Mark Hamill (Star Wars) as Thorn, and Catherine O'Hara (Beetlejuice) as Pinktail.

Is 'The Wild Robot' Worth Watching?

Collider's review stated that The Wild Robot is a gorgeous and emotional triumph, a stunning animated film that cements Chris Sanders as one of the great storytellers in modern animation. The review praised Nyong'o's vocal performance, Pascal's humor and the way Connor brings charm to Brightbill's coming-of-age arc. The review notes that, at the movie's core are the important messages that we determine our own identities, and that family can be found in all sorts of unexpected places and people. All in all, The Wild Robot is an incredibly impressive feat of both animation and storytelling, and Chris Sanders has another delightful feather in his ever-brimming cap.

The Wild Robot is streaming on Peacock.
