With the James Bond franchise currently in a longer-than-expected period of transition, audiences may want to direct their attention to films that subvert the tropes of the espionage franchise in fun ways. One of the best-reviewed anti-James Bond movies ever made is currently streaming on Peacock in the United States, but only for a little while longer. Interestingly, the movie featured none other than former Bond star Pierce Brosnan in its sprawling ensemble cast, along with two other actors who have been linked to the role in the past — Michael Fassbender, who auditioned for Casino Royale, and Regé-Jean Page, whose name was floated as a possible replacement for Daniel Craig.
The movie in question was released theatrically in 2025, but it ended up underperforming despite near-unanimous critical praise and its star-studded cast. It remains the highest-rated movie that director Steven Soderbergh has ever made, which is saying something, given his prolific history of delivering acclaimed work. It also featured Cate Blanchett, Tom Burke, Marisa Abela, and Bond franchise alum Naomie Harris. The 94-minute spy thriller follows a secret agent couple who are tasked with weeding out a mole in MI6, which they do by inviting the suspects to dinner.
