Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn's action and words come as debate continues over artists' freedom to express views on Palestine, and as Ed Sheeran's neutrality has drawn widespread condemnation.
The English singer-songwriter opened his show sharing his opinions on Gaza, noting that while 7 October attacks were horrific, the Israeli response which killed countless women and children was “catastrophic” and “disproportionate”.
Backlash against Sheeran started after he announced that the opening act of his US-leg of the tour, Macklemore, was dropped from the lineup after the American Rapper said “Free Palestine” on-stage at one of the events. Sheeran said the tour promoter was ultimately responsible for the decision.
