Hotels are inherently a little creepy when you think about it. You're sleeping in a room where thousands of complete strangers have slept before you, you have absolutely no idea what happened there, and there's always one suspicious door that doesn't seem to lead anywhere. Still, most hotels don't have a room where more than 50 guests have died. At that point, maybe just accept the complimentary upgrade.

John Cusack (High Fidelity) stars in 1408, the acclaimed Stephen King adaptation that's officially landed on Tubi, where it is currently available to stream completely free with ads. Cusack plays Mike Enslin, a successful author who makes his living investigating supposedly haunted locations and then writing about why the supernatural stories surrounding them are nonsense. But he's got a new target in mind.

No one lasts more than one hour in room 1408 of New York's Dolphin Hotel. In its 95-year history there have been 56 unexplainable deaths within its walls. Now Enslin plans to stay the night to research his latest book, despite warnings from the hotel manager. At first there's nothing. Then a few weird noises. And then the maelstrom begins in room 1408. Fighting for his sanity and for his life, Mike Enslin went in a non-believer. Now that he believes, will he ever get out?

The cast is led by Cusack as Mike alongside Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) as Gerald Olin, Mary McCormack (The West Wing) as Lilly, Jasmine Jessica Anthony (Catch Me If You Can) as Katie, Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Sam Farrell, Len Cariou (Blue Bloods) as Mike's father, Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire) as the hotel engineer, and Andrew Lee Potts (Primeval) as the mailbox guy.

How Good Is '1408'?

1408 currently holds an excellent 80% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes from 176 reviews, with the site's consensus praising its reliance on psychological tension rather than simply throwing gore at the screen. Audiences have been somewhat cooler at 61%, but the movie has become one of the more enduring King adaptations of the 2000s.

Mikael Håfström (Escape Plan) directs from a screenplay by Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski, adapting King's short story from Everything's Eventual. It worked at the box office, too. Produced for around $25 million, 1408 earned approximately $132 million worldwide, including nearly $72 million in the United States and Canada. Not bad for a movie where most of the action takes place inside a hotel room.

1408 is streaming on Tubi.
