After working together on a string of well-received movies in the 2000s, starting with Gladiator and ending with Robin Hood, director Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe appear to have had a falling out. Both have made snarky comments about one another in recent months, but it would appear that their biggest hits came when they were working together. Scott, of course, directed The Martian with Matt Damon in the lead in 2015, while Crowe headlined Noah for director Darren Aronofsky. However, the last few years have been marked by box-office underperformance for both. This September, Crowe and Scott both suffered major box-office setbacks while continuing to prove their worth on streaming. October is likely to be interesting as well, with a highly contentious movie in their shared history landing on Netflix.

This September, Crowe appeared in a couple of two-handers — the first, The Weight, was released in theaters, and the second, Unabomber, debuted on Netflix. While The Weight emerged as his highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes in nearly three decades, it appears to have stalled short of the $5 million mark at the box office. Scott, on the other hand, delivered one of his biggest-ever bombs, the sci-fi film The Dog Stars, which grossed less than $15 million domestically against a reported budget of around $100 million.
