Horror sequels have the unenviable job of trying to recreate what made their predecessors scary without simply serving up the same nightmare again. Following up The Shining is an even more ridiculous assignment, but Mike Flanagan somehow managed to make a sequel that works both as a continuation of Stanley Kubrick's movie and an adaptation of Stephen King's novel. Now, the underrated horror sequel is officially coming to a new streamer this week.

Doctor Sleep is officially getting a new streaming home next month, with the 2019 supernatural horror movie joining Paramount+ in the United States on October 1. Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) delivers one of the movie's standout performances as the leader of a sinister group that feeds on children with psychic abilities. Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Ferguson) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before — at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past. The cast is led by Ewan McGregor (Star Wars) as Dan Torrance, alongside Ferguson as Rose, Kyliegh Curran (The Fall of the House of Usher) as Abra Stone, Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water) as Billy Freeman, Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds) as Crow Daddy, Emily Alyn Lind (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) as Snakebite Andi, Bruce Greenwood (The Fall of the House of Usher) as Dr. John Dalton, and Alex Essoe (Midnight Mass) as Wendy Torrance.

How Good Is 'Doctor Sleep'?

Flanagan faced an almost impossible balancing act with Doctor Sleep, particularly because King's original The Shining novel and Kubrick's adaptation famously went in very different directions, but for the most part, he nevertheless found a way to reconcile the two, resulting in a movie that currently holds a 79% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film struggled somewhat at the multiplexes, grossing approximately $72 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $45 million. Its reputation has grown considerably in the years since, however, as "FlanaFans" discovered it as Flanagan exploded as a streaming lord.

Doctor Sleep begins streaming on Paramount+ in the United States on October 1.
