Of all the beloved sci-fi movies from the 1980s, few have proven more enduring than Ghostbusters. Four decades later, the ghoul-catching franchise is returning for more. Ghostbusters: Night Shift, as announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, will make its big Netflix splash in 2027. In reference to the events of 1989's Ghostbusters 2, Ghostbusters: Night Shift is said to take place in 1994, "five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk."
Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Dan Aykroyd will executive produce Ghostbusters: Night Shift. This animated rendition of the sci-fi juggernaut isn't the first of its kind. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters proved favorites of young audiences. But for every great (or not so great) entry into the Ghostbusters franchise, nothing can really compare to the original. The story of Peter (Bill Murray), Egon (Harold Ramis), and Ray (Aykroyd), as they are fired from Columbia University and eventually join forces with Winston (Ernie Hudson), is the stuff of cinematic legend.
Released in June 1984, Ghostbusters was a huge hit with critics upon release, with most of the praise going to the film's comedy, horror, and special effects. After admitting that the film is a clash of approaches that normally wouldn't work, critic Roger Ebert admitted that this blockbuster was the exception, writing, "It’s (1) a special-effects blockbuster, and (2) a sly dialogue movie, in which everybody talks to each other like smart graduate students who are in on the joke." Four decades on, the film is still a must-watch for all generations. However, you'll have to hurry, as Ghostbusters is being officially removed from the Netflix catalog starting October 1, 2026.
How Much Did 'Ghostbusters' Make at the Box Office?
Not just a big critical success, Ghostbusters was also a massive hit commercially. Against a reported production budget of $30 million, the film made a total of $295 million at the global box office, split between a domestic haul of $242 million and a further $53 million from overseas markets. The movie was one of the highest-grossing of 1984, coming second in the domestic charts behind Beverly Hills Cop.
