It's not long before Tom Cruise returns to the big screen, after blessing last summer's box office with his final outing as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. In his first non-franchise film since 2017's American Made, the satirical black comedy Digger promises to be a huge hit, although those rumors of it being a musical have since been squashed.

Digger hits theaters on October 2, 2026, and is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu in his first English-language film since his 2015 hit The Revenant. Already, the film is becoming an early favorite for next year's Academy Awards race, with some touting Cruise for his first acting nomination since 2000's Magnolia. This was Cruise's third acting nomination, having previously been recognized for the brilliant 1996 film Jerry Maguire, which came six years after his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor as Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July.

A critically acclaimed anti-war movie that boasts one of Cruise's best performances to date, Born on the Fourth of July is a must-watch for any fan of either war films or Cruise. Based on the 1976 autobiography of the aforementioned Ron Kovic, the film was an almighty success with the Academy, with Cruise's acting nod being one of the eight nominations it received at the 1990 ceremony. The film won Best Editing, and Oliver Stone took home Best Director. However, for fans of the film, it's not all good news, as Born on the Fourth of July is being removed from the Netflix catalog on October 1, 2026.

Tom Cruise Is Making Another Legacy Sequel

After proving that a legacy sequel could be a huge blockbuster success against the odds with Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise is getting behind the wheel of another vehicle for a legacy sequel that has been rumored since last summer's F1: The Movie. Days of Thunder 2, which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2028, sees Cruise team up with Anne Hathaway, who is currently in the middle of the biggest year of her career. The first poster for the film features a race car, a cowboy hat, and Cruise and Hathaway already looking as charismatic as ever, so it's no wonder fans can't wait.
