Matthew McConaughey recently made a return to the big screen with the critically acclaimed neo-Western The Rivals of Amziah King. It marked his first theatrical release since The Gentlemen, which debuted back in 2019. Since then, McConaughey headlined the survival thriller The Lost Bus, which was released on Apple TV last year. More recently, he debuted the Apple TV comedy series Brothers, in which he and Woody Harrelson star as fictional versions of themselves. McConaughey had a famous renaissance in the 2010s, which saw him star in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and win an Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. During this time, he also took perhaps the riskiest swing of his career with a movie that was slapped with a dreaded NC-17 rating by the Motion Picture Association.

The movie in question was recently added to the Paramount+ library, which gives a massive audience a chance to check it out. Released in 2011, it remains one of the final films of the legendary William Friedkin's career. The movie features McConaughey as a cop who moonlights as an assassin and gets embroiled in a sinister murder plot in Texas. The film was based on a play by Tracy Letts, and it also featured Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Thomas Haden Church.
