Not long ago, Matt Damon had found success as a regular ensemble performer in Christopher Nolan movies, such as Interstellar and the Best Picture-winning biopic Oppenheimer. This summer, he was finally upgraded from bridesmaid to bride as he took the lead role as the King of Ithaca in Nolan's ambitious historical adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. Joined by a stacked cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, and more, Damon was part of one of the most successful movies of all time, both critically and commercially.

In an extended theatrical run that is still continuing several months later, The Odyssey has made over $1.7 billion worldwide, enough to be the 11th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. The film is easily Nolan's biggest movie of all time, overtaking his only other billion-dollar hits, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The film is also currently the frontrunner to win the Best Picture prize at next year's Academy Awards. The Odyssey was an almighty success with critics, being called an "unrivaled cinematic spectacle" and "much more than a star-studded blockbuster" in Joe Schmidt's review for Collider.

With a Best Actor campaign for Damon beginning to stir, his fans are heading back into his catalog to catch one of his best performances, one that was cruelly overlooked by the Academy. As the slick, sociopathic Colin Sullivan, Damon joined Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson, Vera Farmiga, and Martin Sheen in the hugely successful gangster flick The Departed. A remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, Martin Scorsese's masterpiece was the proud winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is currently one of the ten most-watched movies on HBO Max in the U.S.

How Much Did 'The Departed' Make at the Box Office?

A success with critics and during awards season, could The Departed complete the set with commercial triumph? Against a reported $90 million budget, the crime epic made $289 million in global revenue, split between a domestic haul of $132 million and a further $157 million from overseas markets. This was enough to see the film finish 2006 as the year's 14th highest-grossing movie worldwide.
