Escaping the entity at the center of It Follows was never as simple as surviving one terrifying night. The shape-shifting creature could be slowed down and passed to another victim, but it never stopped walking toward whoever carried its curse. More than a decade after Jay Height seemingly bought herself some time, her nightmare is finally getting closer to following her back onto the big screen.
David Robert Mitchell's 2014 horror movie transformed an ordinary figure walking in the distance into one of the genre's most unnerving sights. Maika Monroe's performance helped turn Jay into a modern final girl, while Disasterpeace's synth-heavy score made every approaching stranger feel dangerous. The movie's deliberately ambiguous ending also left audiences wondering whether Jay and Paul had escaped the entity or merely delayed another attack.
Production company Curious Gremlin has now confirmed that principal photography has officially wrapped on They Follow. Monroe will reprise her role as Jay, with Mitchell returning to write and direct the long-awaited sequel. No story details or images were included with the announcement, but completing production moves the movie into post-production and brings it considerably closer to theaters.
'They Follow' Is Bringing Back the Original Movie's Most Important Pieces
Disasterpeace is also returning to compose the sequel's score, preserving one of the most recognizable elements of the original movie. Monroe will be joined by Naomi Ackie, Jackie Earle Haley, Justine Lupe, Michael Gandolfini, Anna Mirodin, Jayne Taini, Tom Pecinka, Melora Walters, Ben Krieger, Natalie Shinnick, and Jan Hoag. Their characters remain unknown, giving fans little indication of who might be hunted, who might understand the entity, or whether every new face could become one of its disguises.
The pluralized title has already raised questions about how Mitchell intends to expand the rules and scale of the original story. It Follows focused on one entity pursuing one cursed victim at a time, but They Follow suggests Jay may encounter several creatures or other people trapped in the same cycle. Mitchell has kept the sequel's premise hidden, allowing the title and expanding ensemble to fuel theories without revealing whether Jay will remain the target.
They Follow does not currently have a release date. The sequel will arrive more than a decade after It Follows began its theatrical run and turned its relentless supernatural stalker into a horror icon.
