This past weekend saw Tom Cruise's biggest creative swing in decades, Digger, crash and burn in its box-office debut. The mega-budget political satire, directed by the two-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, grossed around $20 million worldwide against a budget that has been reported to be between $140 million and $180 million. At this rate, given the poor reception that Digger has earned from the moviegoing public, the chances of it hitting the $50 million mark look slim. But the movie is already drawing the support of admirers, and looks destined to become a future cult classic. That said, Cruise's fans were mostly left hanging, and now they're turning to some of his past movies to satisfy their need for speed.
While Top Gun: Maverick has once again jumped to the number-one spot on the global Paramount+ viewership charts, two other movies starring Cruise found spots on the domestic Prime Video leaderboard recently. The two movies are a part of an abandoned film series based on Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. In a recent interview with Collider, Child said that he vetoed a third movie in favor of a streaming series, and the franchise was rebooted as the Prime Video Reacher show that we all know and love. Child has since said that Cruise was miscast as the hulking Reacher, and that Alan Ritchson was born to play the role.
Tom Cruise Can't Be Defeated
Prime Video's Reacher recently concluded its fourth season with near-unanimous praise and record-breaking viewership. The series also paved the way for the equally well-received spin-off Neagley, which continues to top the Prime Video viewership charts two weeks after its release. According to FlixPatrol, Cruise's Jack Reacher and its sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, both found top-10 spots on the domestic Prime Video list this week. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and released in 2012, Jack Reacher was a solid hit, grossing $218 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million. Jack Reacher 2, directed by Edward Zwick, grossed $162 million worldwide against a similar budget in 2016. You can watch the two movies on Prime Video, and you can check out Digger on the big screen.
