When you think of Guy Ritchie, one of the first things that is likely to come to mind is Sherlock Holmes, but he has a new movie crushing expectations on streaming. Ritchie started the year by expanding the Sherlock Holmes universe via the beloved prequel series, Young Sherlock, which dropped as a binge back in March. The show spent weeks at the peak of Prime Video streaming charts before the studio finally decided to bring it back for Season 2. Ritchie is also enjoying the success of a few other shows, MobLand and The Gentlemen, but only one of them is confirmed to return for another season. Paramount has already picked up MobLand for Season 3, but Netflix has yet to decide the fate of The Gentlemen, despite it being one of the most-watched shows of the entire year.

Between all these new TV shows, Ritchie returned to the big screen for the first time since 2024's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the WWII movie starring Alan Ritchson. He did direct a feature film last year, Fountain of Youth, but the film was released straight-to-streaming on Apple TV and was not released in theaters. This year, Ritchie's return to theaters came with In The Grey, the new action thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill, both of whom Ritchie has worked with before. In The Grey finished its run at the box office after grossing less than $30 million, but the film has been in the VOD top 10 on Apple TV for over 120 days now. It's also been the #1 most-watched title on Starz for several weeks.

What Is 'In The Grey' About?

In addition to Cavill and Gyllenhaal, In The Grey also stars Eiza González and Rosamund Pike. Pike is best known for her role in Prime Video's canceled fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. In addition to directing the film, Ritchie also came up with the idea and wrote the script for In The Grey. The official synopsis for the film, which earned scores of 53% from critics and 82% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:

“In The Grey follows a covert team of elite operatives who live in the global shadows, as comfortable wielding power and influence as they are automatic weapons and high explosives. When a ruthless despot steals a billion-dollar fortune, the team is sent to steal it back on what would be, for anyone else, a suicide mission. What begins as an impossible heist gets much worse, spiraling into an all-out war of strategy, deception and survival.”
