Following the 2026 iteration of the Toronto International Film Festival, the first whispers of next year's Oscars race have begun circulating. The likes of Curry Barker's breakout and the highest-grossing original horror movie of this century, Obsession, Ryan Gosling's epic Project Hail Mary, and Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic The Odyssey remain firm favorites, but there are now some newer names slowly taking the spotlight following festival success.
The Spanish-language effort La Bola Negra, which stars Penélope Cruz, is already causing plenty of buzz following its impressive festival debut, and is almost definitely Netflix's best chance at winning gold. Other films earning acclaim include Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine, the crowd-pleasing I Play Rocky, and the gut-wrenching Elsinore, which is receiving plenty of attention courtesy of Andrew Scott's devastating lead performance. Last weekend, another name entered the 2027 Oscars race thanks to a New York Film Festival debut that stunned and impressed those in attendance.
The film in question is Godzilla Minus Zero, which is hoping to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, which won the Best Visual Effects prize at the Academy Awards. Following its film festival debut, which scored first responses that called for another Oscar win and heralded the film a "towering epic," Godzilla Minus Zero has earned its first Rotten Tomatoes score. At the time of writing, the sci-fi sequel boasts a near-perfect rating of 96% from 23 reviews, which is just shy of the 99% score earned by 2023's Godzilla Minus One.
Who Stars in 'Godzilla Minus Zero'?
Once again written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus Zero boasts a stellar cast that includes Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi, Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sōsaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yōji Akitsu. The film is set to debut in North American theaters and IMAX on November 6, 2026, with a synopsis reading:
"War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here."
