Few names are hotter in Hollywood right now than Glen Powell, and one of his biggest movies from the last few years is finding continued success on streaming. Powell had been around for years as a supporting figure in big movies like The Dark Knight Rises, but it wasn’t until he teamed up with Tom Cruise in 2022 for Top Gun: Maverick that he truly arrived as a star. Powell’s rising stardom was called into question last year when he headlined The Running Man, the Stephen King remake written and directed by Edgar Wright. The film received middling reviews and was also one of the biggest bombs of the year. Powell has found redemption with his new TV series, Chad Powers, which has become one of the most-watched shows of the year on Hulu.

Top Gun: Maverick is easily the most successful movie of Powell’s career, and while that might be the case for a while, another of his movies that crushed at the box office was Twisters. The film is a sequel to the 1996 cult classic, Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, but Lee Isaac Chung was enlisted to helm the second installment with a script from Joseph Kosinski and Mark L. Smith. If Kosinski’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he directed both Top Gun: Maverick and F1, the 2025 box office smash hit starring Brad Pitt. Now two years removed from the global premiere of Twisters in theaters, the film has found a streaming home on Hulu, but it’s also become one of the most-watched titles in the world on Prime Video. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos star alongside Powell in the film.

What Is ‘Twisters’ About?

Twisters came into theaters carrying a $155 million budget, but the film broke even by grossing $372 million at the global box office. Maura Tierney, famed for her roles in ER and Law & Order, also had a key role in Twisters. The official synopsis for the film, which holds scores of 75% from critics and 90% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:

“Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.”
