Cops and robbers is an evergreen genre for a reason. Good versus bad: will the morally upstanding law enforcer take down the wily and charismatic criminal by the end? Well, obviously yes, but few movies have ever quite embraced the sheer griminess of the concept quite like this film. Released in 2018, Gerard Butler and director Christian Gudegast delivered an unapologetically muscular crime thriller and put a more pulpy spin on that formula.
Eight years later, Den of Thieves has found another streaming home. The 140-minute action thriller joined AMC+'s lineup in October and is now available to watch in the United States. A Los Angeles crime saga in the vein of Heat, the film follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept and the state's most successful bank robbery crew as they plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles. Den of Thieves centers on Nick "Big Nick" O'Brien, the hard-drinking and morally flexible leader of the unit.
The cast is led by Butler (300) as Big Nick, alongside Pablo Schreiber (Halo) as Ray Merrimen, O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) as Donnie Wilson, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson (Power) as Enson Levoux, Maurice Compte (Narcos) as Benny "Borracho" Magalon, Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town) as Murph Connors, Evan Jones (8 Mile) as Bo "Bosco" Ostroman, and Dawn Olivieri (Yellowstone) as Debbie O'Brien.
'Den of Thieves' Became a Cult Action Hit
Critics weren't overly enamored with the movie upon release and at the moment it only holds a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 135 reviews, but audiences liked it a smidge more and it sits with a 64% Popcornmeter score. Critics particularly noted its similarities to classic heist movies, something that ultimately did little to prevent the film from developing a loyal following.
That audience proved large enough to turn Gudegast's crime thriller into a franchise. Den of Thieves earned $44.9 million domestically and approximately $80 million worldwide during its original theatrical run and that longevity eventually resulted in Butler, Jackson and Gudegast returning for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. What's more, there are now plans for the franchise to expand further with a third movie that will take the action to Africa.
Den of Thieves is streaming now.
