With the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and this year's Avengers: Endgame re-release, the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't seem to be on shaky footing any longer. However, the message seems to be clear: audiences will show up to theaters for events, and not every MCU project is guaranteed blockbuster success anymore. The highest-grossing film franchise in history had an unbeatable decade-long run, but it has taken several hits in the last few years. The franchise is hoping to cement its comeback this December with the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, which has already passed a majestic box-office milestone with more than two months remaining until release.
According to Global Box Office, the movie has amassed more than $100 million in pre-release ticket sales globally. It was previously reported that the film is tracking to deliver more than $300 million in its domestic debut, but this number could fluctuate drastically closer to release. Remember, Endgame earned a record-breaking $357 million in its domestic debut in 2019, a record that was broken by Spider-Man: Brand New Day's $360 million haul this year. Endgame has added more than $120 million worldwide thanks to a re-release that has pushed it past James Cameron's Avatar to become the highest-grossing film in global box-office history. With $2.95 billion in the bank, the film has a great chance of becoming the first hit to pass the $3 billion mark worldwide.
A Lot Is Riding on 'Avengers: Doomsday'
This will no doubt be great publicity for Doomsday, which is poised to face off against Dune: Part Three in December. Director Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi trilogy-capper is also eying a franchise-record debut of more than $100 million domestically, which means that an all-time weekend record is on the cards this December. Doomsday brings back Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans to the MCU after their apparent retirement from the franchise in Endgame; while Evans is returning as Captain America, Downey Jr. is playing the iconic Marvel villain Doctor Doom. The movie was directed by the Russo Brothers, who previously helmed both Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War before embarking on a mostly disappointing mega-budget streaming streak.
