It has been a particularly exciting year so far for fans of World War II-inspired storytelling, with movies such as Pressure and Lucky Strike jostling for the audience’s attention alongside the History Channel documentary series World War II with Tom Hanks. Then, there was the residual heat of Russell Crowe’s streaming blockbuster Nuremberg, combined with a new 25th-anniversary reunion special for Band of Brothers. Now, audiences can check out one of the most overlooked World War II movies of the last few decades for free on a new platform.
The movie in question serves as a companion piece to the critically acclaimed German-language epic Downfall, which has been hailed as one of the finest WWII movies ever made. Based on Adolf Hitler’s final days in his Berlin bunker, Downfall holds a “Certified Fresh” 90% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus describes it as “an illuminating, thoughtful and detailed account of Hitler's last days.” The movie earned star Bruno Ganz widespread acclaim for his central performance, in addition to receiving an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
