What an incredible year Anne Hathaway is having, with a supporting role in Christopher Nolan's record-breaking epic The Odyssey, lead roles in the legacy sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the original sci-fi movie The End of Oak Street, and the hotly anticipated upcoming thriller Verity. Combined, Hathaway's two blockbusters this year have grossed more than $2.5 billion worldwide. If Verity performs like author Colleen Hoover's other hit adaptation, It Ends with Us, Hathaway could be looking at another blockbuster. A bona fide movie star who has also not been afraid of experimenting with small-scale projects — she also headlined David Lowery's A24 movie Mother Mary this year — Hathaway received immense critical acclaim for her performance in a genre-bending 2016 movie that's heading to a new streaming platform.
The movie in question was directed by Nacho Vigalondo, the filmmaker behind the cult classic time-travel thriller Timecrimes. It also featured Jason Sudeikis and Dan Stevens in supporting roles, while Hathaway plays an alcoholic who discovers she can control a kaiju in South Korea from thousands of miles away. A character study of an addict and a dark comedy featuring a monster, the film was perhaps too esoteric for the mainstream. However, with everyone involved having grown in prominence since then, not to mention the cultural influence of South Korean films, shows, and music, the movie has a great chance of being discovered.
