Although he hasn't had the greatest box-office track record in the last few years, director Guy Ritchie can be counted on to deliver home-video success. Not all of his movies find an audience in their post-theatrical phase — look no further than Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre — but most of them have done phenomenally well on PVOD and streaming in recent years. As we speak, Ritchie has a number of hit titles charting at the same time across platforms. Two of those titles — MobLand and The Gentlemen — are shows that recently debuted their second seasons. Two others are movies starring Henry Cavill.
The more recent is In the Grey, the action-thriller that debuted theatrically earlier this year and ended its box-office run with around $28 million worldwide against a reported budget of $70 million. Also featuring Eiza González and Jake Gyllenhaal, both of whom have worked with Ritchie before, the film received mixed reviews. It's currently sitting at a 53% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Pitting together charismatic stars in an underpowered caper, Guy Ritchie's In the Grey is a slick action vehicle whose lack of fresh ideas ultimately put its entertainment value in the red." Following its disappointing box-office performance, In the Grey has emerged as a major streaming hit. According to FlixPatrol, it's currently the number one movie domestically on Starz.
Guy Ritchie Is Having an Eventful Year
Meanwhile, Netflix's latest viewership report revealed that Ritchie's 2024 film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, accumulated 3.4 million views for the second week in a row. Combined, the movie has generated nearly 7 million views since its Netflix return, while both seasons of The Gentlemen and MobLand found spots on the television rankings for the third week in a row. A World War II-era espionage action thriller, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare also features Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, alongside Cavill and González. It grossed approximately $30 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million. The movie now holds a 68% critics' score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Cranking up a true story of derring-do into a high-octane action flick that's heavy on spectacle if not suspense, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is another solid entry into Guy Ritchie's pantheon." Ritchie will return with the second season of Prime Video's Young Sherlock later this year, and his next theatrical release, Wife & Dog, in February 2027.
