We've all wanted someone to fall hopelessly in love with us. And that probably sounds like quite a romantic thing until you focus on the word "hopelessly" and then you realize that there's actually quite a significant difference between a charming affection and waking up to discover your crush has become devoted to you. But in a violent, unnatural way. That delightful premise was the twisted heart and soul of one of 2026's biggest horror surprises, taking the demented ball and running somewhere very unpleasant with it.
Curry Barker’s Obsession has now spent an extraordinary 129 days inside JustWatch’s U.S. streaming Top 10, continuing a run that has previously taken the horror sensation all the way to No. 1. The movie is currently available to stream on Peacock in the United States, months after turning a production budget of less than $1 million into more than $427 million worldwide.
A young man named Bear Bailey has been in love with his childhood friend Nikki Freeman for ages. When he thinks he's messed up with her, Bear uses an item called the One Wish Willow to wish for Nikki to love him more than anyone in the world. This causes Nikki to become terrifyingly obsessed with Bear, while the real Nikki occasionally breaks out of her trance.
Who Stars in 'Obsession'?
Michael Johnston (Teen Wolf) stars as Bear alongside Inde Navarrette (Superman & Lois, as well as the upcoming X-Men reboot) as Nikki, with Cooper Tomlinson as Ian, Megan Lawless as Sarah, and Andy Richter (Conan) as Carter. Barker wrote and directed the movie, which was produced by James Harris, Christian Mercuri, Haley Nicole Johnson, and Roman Viaris
Obsession currently holds an excellent 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 327 reviews, while its verified audience score sits even higher at 94%. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus praises the movie for turning its deliberately uncomfortable premise into something disturbing, funny, and thrilling rather than simply playing the material as straightforward romantic horror.
The box office story is even crazier. Peacock says the movie was produced for under $1 million and had already earned more than $427 million worldwide by July, including over $250 million domestically. It subsequently made the jump to Peacock on July 17 after becoming one of the year’s biggest theatrical success stories.
